Degeneration
Ever since I hit 25, I've become very conscious of my mortality. =P
Rephrased in not-so-dramatic language, I've started caring more about my physical body because 1) I'm now a proper grown-up, 2) like Logan, my cells regenerate slower than they used to and 3) I have to make sure that I'm fit to carry a child, whenever that happens. I've always had this strange mentality that things have to change once I become an adult. For example, I feel like I need to get fit before I turn 30 because 30 is the point of no return (Why, for the life of me I cannot tell you - you have to ask my subconscious). I also feel like my makeup-free years are over, and now that I'll be a (hopefully) working adult, I have to be a well-groomed and poised professional.
Therefore, some of the ways that I've made changes to my life include:
-Using makeup more often in public settings to look professional
-Spending more on clothes to look more put together.
-Using sunblock on my face and sometimes on my arms, especially when I go jogging in the harsh UV rays of the morning.
-Speaking of jogging, yes, I do that every other day now. Jogging is excruciatingly boring but my life goals are more important. =P Though I might switch over to Zumba which looks way more fun.
Being an adult takes so much time. Makeup alone can take up to an hour, depending on how elaborate or flawless the look is. With all these additional steps to my routine, I find that I can't be ready to go in 15 minutes from the time I jump out of bed anymore, so I have to get up earlier. On the topic of jumping out of bed, I can't even do that nowadays since I run the risk of pulling some back muscle without a proper warm up. I'm only 26! How is this happening to me? =P
I also use sunblock regularly now. I'm a latecomer to the game because skincare wasn't a huge priority of mine in my teenage years. Online articles all tout the importance of using sunblock to prevent skin aging, but come on. Three layers on your face in the hot and humid Malaysian weather? Ain't no one got time for that. I only realized how important it was when freckles began to appear on my arms. NOOO. This was probably due to how often I had to walk Jasmine last summer. I've always taken my fair complexion for granted, but my skin cells aren't what they used to be and need more TLC nowadays. And since I jog in the mornings when the sun is shining in full glory, sunblock is non-negotiable. Bye-bye, carefree days of neglecting my skin for the past 25 years - now I'm going to avoid additional sun damage as much as I can.
About jogging, nothing to talk about there. It's the most boring exercise ever created in the history of mankind, and I hate it. The only consolation is that I get to feel good that I'm checking off something on my "to-achieve" list before I turn 30. My future babies had better appreciate what their mummy is doing in preparation for their arrival. =P
Gonna sign off now and keep adulting. Till next time!

ROFL at that last comment on jogging. Props to you for having such strong willpower despite hating it. I switched over to jump rope because the boring factor is less daunting since "10 minutes of jump rope = 30 minutes of running" according to multiple online sources. They better not be lying to me, otherwise I'd just give up on cardio altogether. XD
ReplyDeleteREALLY? Gotta get myself a jump rope then. xD I'm just waiting for the day medical technology creates pills for my daily exercise needs. =P
DeleteYeah, that's what everyone says on the internet (both from exercisers and fitness gurus). It's supposedly a more efficient workout if you can keep up with it for 10 minutes. I think it's true (?). When I tried running after 3 weeks of consistent jump roping ever other day, I was surprised that I got better than before even though the movements are different.
DeleteIntensity of the exercise is inversely proportional to the duration.
ReplyDeleteJogging is low intensity, so you have to jog longer and more often. Zumba is moderate intensity. If you wanna up it, there's high intensity weight training.
General guidelines:
Low intensity - 5 times a week
Medium - 3 or 4 times a week
High - 2 or 3 times a week
Research has proven high intensity exercises are more effective at increasing your resting metabolic rate. In English, it means you will have increased fat burning, even when you're not exercising.
@Jave, thanks for the info. Does an increased metabolic rate mean increased stamina as well? I really don't care about fat-burning - I just want to up my cardio fitness. =P
